There is no doubt that this roller coaster of life can sometimes be unfair…
Hurdle after hurdle and no one with sympathy, only judgement to say it’s your fault or even worse, the snap reply of “That would never happen to me!”
The truth is, if it never happened to anyone, we wouldn’t have a business.
I have the life gift of learning and living on my own since I was 17 without parents, without the basic knowledge that comes second nature to most (cooking, budgeting, saving, decorating, etc.). Every bit of pain that I went through, whether spiritual or financial has been a learning journey for me that I choose to share with you. This is because I had no one, I will be someone for you.
You see, I’ve lived check to check before. I’ve been down to just a dime in my pocket and no hope for getting more money any time soon. I’ve been so hungry that my stomach began to eat itself. I’ve been so tired after work that I didn’t want to cook. I’ve been so frustrated walking into the grocery store because I didn’t know what the heck to buy. I’ve been denied a job because on paper I was over qualified because of my accomplishments or “too relationship oriented” for a salaried sales position. <– That alone made me second guess the true value of an education and want a refund on my student loans.
I’ve hit bottom so low that when I asked for bus tokens to get to work and/or to job interviews, I was denied multiple times once by our government and another by a non-profit. I’ve struggled to pay a $100 cable bill because I wouldn’t know what to do without it. I’ve struggled to pay a cell phone bill because if I lost it, there’s no way I’d have internet access. I’ve done this TWICE in my life. Once at 17. Again at 34. The first was unconscious, it was learning. The second was by choice because I had faith in what seemed to be a system that worked to create businesses, moreso than myself. It again was learning.
I’ve been blessed to say that none of these struggles have been a result of my health taking a turn for the worst. That is definitely not as easy to say for 10% of Americans.
Many people say, oh, you have to go through this in order to understand it or be better. I say, you shouldn’t have to go through it because your talent, time, and energy is needed elsewhere in the world and to deprive you of this time is an injustice to all we could accomplish if we simply worked together. Regardless, the clock is always ticking and how you want to live your life is how I want you to be empowered to do so.
