Ingredients for Building a Resilient #Business #Entrepreneur

Over the next few weeks, we will share what we think the “meal plan” is for building our company, Stretch Recipes.  We’ve already shared 4 out of 8 our key recipes for us building the Stretch Recipes Company meal plan that includes – CompassionGratefulness; Loving; and Team Work
This week’s recipe came at a perfect time – Resiliency.

The most valuable lesson anyone can take from being an entrepreneur is what failure gives you.  On the surface, it sounds as if it’s hog wash or something you never want to bring up or admit to, but the lessons learned from failure make you better, expand your vision, and give you what’s needed to be better, stronger, faster, wiser… Most importantly, a way to prevent the same mistake from happening again.

When faced with failure, you may go beat red as your stomach drops and temperature rises -or- you may want to go hide under a rock and cry. It’s painful to let someone else down, to let your customers down, and to let yourself down.  But always, what you do next is what defines you.  To be strong after and keep moving forward, stronger, is what will lead you to success.

With that said, here are the top 6 ingredients for building a resilient business:

1)  Quickly address & remedy any misfortune or failure.  When you are faced with failure or a scandal, quickly address it head on.  Ask yourself what are all the ways you can make it up to those affected and put it into motion.   Most recently, we had to reschedule our Winter Wonderland festival for 2/14.  As a result, it cost us deeply, but we knew to proceed without these pieces in place would lead to a poor outcome for our paying customers.  We took on a $3k loss, but it was better to do that than experience our customers being disappointed with our event.  We addressed it with our customers and we put an action plan to notify and apologize.  Now, we are working to make the experience even better in February to make it up to them.

2)  Keep Moving Forward – It’s sounds almost a little masochistic after failing, but it’s true.  Take the lessons learned and be better and stronger for next time. Put things in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again.  A prime example of moving forward for us – When we had to postpone the Festival for 2/14, we were sitting on 250 cupcakes and sweets for the goodie bags that were not going to be good in February, so we headed over to La Barbecue and invited everyone over shared them with our attendees!  This week, I’m planning a cocktail party to ensure the Daily Greens doesn’t go to waste as well… Stay tuned for that info on our blog!

3)  Take all failures as a lesson – What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!

4) When one person yells or shares negativity, it does not mean all – There’s always going to be someone who has a gloom and doom perspective, you must remember that they are only sharing these negative thoughts based on their perception of an experience they had.  They are doing the best with what they have and many people react to failure differently and will react to what you do and try differently.  So this  ingredient serves as a reminder to know that how 1 person thinks is not how all may think.  Inversely, how all may think, is not how one person may think.  :-)  The only thing that matters when you build a business is that you keep thinking well and that you are open to positive feedback & constructive criticism to be better. In order to be resilient, you will have to endure and know the difference.

5)  Remember your passion & remember why!   During the hardest of times, this will keep you moving forward.  Keeping your head in the game by always driving with your end goal, solving the why in mind will help you navigate the rough waters when things get tough.

6)  Keep testing!  Even when your core messaging is right on, keep trying new ways to reach people to learn more about them and what they want and need.  It will help you serve them better and provide you with the ideas needed to forge ahead if the market swings.  I’ve tested so many messages and found that only about 1% of the market truly understood what I meant and where we were headed.  So, I’ve had to switch things up to be effective.  I’ve had to experiment and roll out new ways to say the same thing to ensure our messaging is understood and received by the entire market we address.

After all is said and done, we are all about serving our customers and empowering people to have the tools they need to succeed.  We’re on a mission to help everyone eat better and save more had to change to We’re on a mission to EMPOWER everyone to eat better and save more.  Stretch went from being an app that let’s you enter your budget, choose your meals, and automatically receive your shopping list and coupons -to- We’re building a platform that empowers you to shop for organics without blowing your whole paycheck!   We went from Cooking classes to cooking experiences to a annual festivals.  We will do whatever is easier for consumers to understand and get excited about cooking and their relationship with food. Why?  Because we are on a mission to EMPOWER everyone to eat better and save more.  This means lowering the price of organics and giving the people the tools they need and will use.  If it doesn’t empower you, if it doesn’t work, we’ve done something wrong and have to go back to the drawing board!
